Lena Piccininni cuts HerChairHisHair at The Line Up Inc Event

Recently a group of talented and motivated barbers came together to form The Line Up Inc here in New York. It consists of 7 barbershops who put on showcases and bring our industry together while showcasing some of the finest talent it has to offer.

While at one of their events hosted at Filthy Rich Barbershop in Queens, NY I had the pleasure to be cut by Lena Piccininni. She was asked to cut on the fly and, therefore, needed a model last minute so of course I said yes to being cut by one of my fellow ladies! Lena did not use any of her own tools so I thought that was pretty awesome, she just went for it.

TheFit_Barber, David Falla, and I figured not only would this be a fun video but a great opportunity to show us having fun while Lena kicks ass. A big thank you to David for putting this awesome video together and not looking at me like I was crazy when I first asked at the event.

Enjoy.

Full disclosure: I came from working in the shop all day and had a decent amount of product in my hair so please excuse it. :-X

ScissorSalute™: Behind the Scenes

This week was an exciting one for Her Chair His Hair primarily because the whole idea behind the site is meeting new barbers while connecting with them on both a professional and personal level. I was generously invited to sit in on this week's airing of the ScissorSalute™ Show which streams on USTREAM.tv Mondays 7:00-9:00 PM EST. To say this group was welcoming would be an understatement; by the time I left I felt like I knew each of them for a long time despite the crazy taping schedule!

The whole crew that you see on Instagram representing ScissorSalute™ was there with a buzz of energy to put on a fantastic show. Sefiroh (@Sefiroh), the creator of the show, Irene (@Newyorican_queen), co-owner, barbers Eli (@Elidabarber), , Ivan, Chauncey (@Chauncey_thebarber), and new addition Nicole Digilio representing Hair Stylists were hilarious and a great group to work with. This week they had Quisqueya Barbershop of Dover, NJ and I actually knew them from high school - talk about a small world! This Monday was a rare one off and I wanted to accept my invitation to see the show so I had no clue that the guys from Quisqueya would be there. Nestor (@Inked_Barber), David (@thefit_barber), Danny (@Danny_stylez91), Domingo (@Sir_Fade_Alot), were all there to show their best work and to answer questions about their career thus far. I know for a fact this shop stays busy!

What I loved most about Monday night was the feeling of collaboration. Every single person in that room was there because they love what they do and they wanted to share it beyond their shop. Male barbers, Lady Barbers, it didn't matter - we were all just talking shop and discussing what we love which, to me, is what this site is all about. I can't wait to be invited back and discuss Her Chair His Hair  more but most importantly, meet many new creatives and hang with the Scissor Salute crew.

Don't forget to follow these fantastic barbers on Instagram, I've listed their handles next to their names throughout this article. Also, don't forget to catch the ScissorSalute™ Show every Monday 7-9 PM EST on Ustream.com! When you download it, the site will give you a heads up for tuning in the show.

Until next time!

Shaving on Set!

Two weeks ago I had FOUR men's editorials, most on location and all of them requiring the models to shave. All of my barbers whether ladies or gentlemen know that a shave in the shop is fun! You have pre-shave oils, hot lather, maybe a steamer and nice hot or cold towels...oh, and a proper chair. Many of my fellow freelancers can agree that shaving is the last thing you want to take care of on set. Aside from time constrictions, people running around constantly asking for ETA to set, and lack of a proper chair, we dread having a model who isn't freshly shaved. Sure, some clients don't mind scruff, but for those who do, it puts a real damper on the makeup application.

Shaving On Set Her Chair His Hair

I treat men shaving on set just like my female clients having their eyebrows waxed or threaded while preparing for a shoot or special occasion. If you do it too close to the day of the skin will not allow makeup to adhere thus not allowing the artist to cover any redness or flaws. It is a real pain! But I have figured out two small, simple but super helpful solutions that can be applied to shaving whether on set or in a rush.

Glycerine Shaving on Set Her Chair His Hair

Taking a few drops of your drugstore Glycerine and adding it to your shaving cream will help create a barrier on the skin. What most people fail to realize is that when you shave you're not only removing hair but a layer of skin as well which causes inflammation and redness. This is why pre-shave and after shave oils are so important but when you're in a pinch on set this will be a life saver! By creating a thin layer, it protects the skin and allows the Makeup Artist to apply anything on the skin with ease. It also helps male models or male clients who are 'dry shaving' on set prevent breakouts after. I will note that if you have sensitive skin or are treating your skin with any medication, to please take this tip with a grain of salt, I am not a dermatologist and cannot specify who this will work for.

Whip Hand Give Good Face Shaving on Set Her Chair His Hair

While your handy Glycerine helps protect the skin while shaving, you should still continue after as well. Although I haven't had the opportunity to discuss Whiphand Cosmetics on Her Chair His Hair yet, I felt that this product was a must to mention! Riese Lauriat has developed a whole line for makeup artists that I have used since day one, it is a staple for sure. Give Good Face is a rosewater toner that can be used before makeup application as well as after to refresh skin that may dry. So why mention it for shaving? Rosewater is known to reduce redness and naturally balance the skin which most men don't realize they need after using their handy razor. Aside from it helping out your client's skin, Whiphand developed a handy 1 ounce bottle for all your travel needs that can be refilled from their larger size bottle. A definite must have in my kit and all of the guys love how it smells!

I want to hear what your go-to products are for shaving on the go or on set! Lady Barbers, Makeup Artists, Men's Groomers, what do you prefer to use? If you give our two products a try, let us know what you think and if it helped at all! Check back on Thursday at 11:00 AM EST for more reviews, helpful tips and our feature on Chase Monroe, Lady Barber extraordinaire!

Always,

Her Chair His Hair: On Set for Bravo's "Million Dollar Listing"!

Back in early April, I had a crazy weekend! It was not 48 hours of straight partying like you'd imagine it to be but rather approximately 22 hours of work on Saturday and 12 hours, not including travel time, on Sunday. I had the opportunity to be on set for a commercial doing hair and makeup for the female actress but my favorite, of course, was doing the men's grooming for a very well known male model who was the other lead for the shoot.

The client was Ryan Serhant of Bravo's television show, 'Million Dollar Listing', for a $23 MILLION penthouse near the Highline in New York City. $23 MILLION! As I set up my station the only thought that passed through my mind was,"I'm standing on $5,000 right now." Throughout the night there were Ferraris, helicopters and highways shut down for us; to say this was a HUGE blessing would be an understatement!

This was an exciting milestone for my career and I simply wanted to share it with all of you. As I launch Her Chair His Hair, I'm starting to realize that this website is not just another project for me but something I genuinely look forward to working on every day whether it be writing a blog or chatting with followers on Instagram. You all are what make this site and I want to hear about some of your biggest achievements! Have you been on set as a personal barber? Or maybe you recently opened up your own shop. These are all huge milestones that deserve to be celebrated and I want to post them up here. Send us an e-mail at HerChairHisHair@gmail.com or comment below, I look forward to hearing from you!

xx
